Debussy and Ravel led the way in transferring Impressionism from the visual and literary arts to music. French composers were not alone, however, in exploiting the possibilities of Impressionism at the piano. After exploring early depictions of music’s relationship with other arts by the French masters, this course will continue with American composers, and finish with the wonderful evocations of Albeniz and Granados in piano music from Spain.
