This semester we will continue our study of the Protestant Reformation. Following Martin Luther’s successful break with the Catholic Church, King Henry VIII of England and John Calvin from France also succeeded in establishing new faiths. In reaction, the Church convened the Council of Trent and made meaningful reforms; but also authorized the Inquisition to discourage further dissent. Ultimately, the Church was subordinated to the State.
