Along with strolling down memory lane with favorites from the 1950s, we will consider the important factors of the business of rock music; rock in Hollywood; gender and race issues; and the authenticity vs. commercialism challenge.

 

As a bonus, after each session a “homework” PDF with online links will be emailed to participants allowing them to further explore rock documentaries, movies, and video essays at their leisure.

 

Instructor: Steve Lopes earned an Associate in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Wentworth Institute of Technology; a Political Science/History duel major Bachelor of Arts from Youngstown State University; a Master of Arts in Political Science from University at Albany; and a Master’s in Education Psychology from Boston State University. He is also a 1992 graduate of the Harvard Trade Union Program.

 

For four years, he taught at a post high school tech school in Ohio and was an administrator at a Boston tech college.  From 1969-1981, he taught technology at a suburban Boston school district where he got very active in the NEA teacher’s union. In 1981, he joined Kansas NEA as a field organizer for 30 years. Since 2011, he has helped organize many progressive political groups in the KC Metro region.
