DESCRIPTION

Recorded during the Summer 2022 Quarter

Ballet is an art form that has attracted many great composers, as well as many choreographers and dancers, over the century. This course will focus on the music which has been composed for ballets.  We will begin with French ballet during the age of Louis XIV with masters such as Lully, continue with Meyerbeer and Adam, and explore ballet as used in opera including works by Rossini, Verdi, Ponchielli and Borodin.  The course will also include the ballets of Tchaikovsky and his 20th century Russian successors Stravinsky and Prokofiev and finish with American ballet composers Bernstein and Copland, among others. This course will use extensive video excerpts from the great ballets.

Instructor: Don Dagenais is a longtime classical music and opera aficionado.  He has served on the boards of many local music organizations and has been president of most of them, including the Lyric Opera, Summerfest, Kansas City Symphony Alliance, Kansas City Chamber Orchestra and UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance.  For over ten years he has chaired the Lyric Opera Guild opera travel program.  He is semi-retired as a real estate attorney from Lathrop Gage, and lives in Kansas City with his wife Patricia, also a classical music fan.  They have two grown daughters and two grandchildren.
