November 2nd, 1948 was the day Harry Truman confounded all the polls, op-ed writers and commentators, and defeated the Republican Presidential Candidate Thomas Dewey in what has been described as the greatest political upset in American Presidential History.  The results of that election ushered in Truman’s Elected Presidential term that commenced in January of 1949 and ended when he left office in January of 1953.

This series will explore Truman’s “Second Term” as President (1949 – 1953).  Topics we’ll explore in this series: Truman’s domestic agenda (“The Fair Deal”); Post-WWII Economic Prosperity; the White House Reconstruction; the Cold War between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R.; the conclusion of the Berlin Airlift; the impact of the Truman Doctrine (“Containment”), the Marshall Plan, and the development of NATO during his second term; the Soviet development of the Atomic Bomb; Decision to develop the Hydrogen or “Superbomb”; the Communist takeover of China; Seizure of the Railroads; McCarthyism and the “Red Scare”; Puerto Rican Nationalists’ assassination attempt; the “Korean Conflict”; the dismissal of General Douglas MacArthur; and Seizure of the Steel Industries.

Come join us as we continue our study of the Presidency of Harry S. Truman, “The Man from Independence”.
