After the fall of the Roman Empire in the West, the Byzantine Empire, also known as the Eastern Roman Empire, continued for another millennium until the fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Empire in 1453. We’ll look at Byzantine history, architecture, and art beginning in the 6th century. In our survey we will learn about Eastern Orthodox churches and icons.
