This semester we enter the orbit of the Sun King Louis XIV, to explore the reasons he was able to declare, “L e’tat, c’est Moi.” Domestically we’ll analyze how he successfully gained control over law-making, the church and the military. In terms of foreign policy, warfare became a means of assuring peace at home. At war during most of his reign, the War of Spanish Succession was the most significant because it determined the future of the Spanish empire in Europe and abroad.
