As Europe reoriented to the North Atlantic, the French, Dutch and English jockeyed for position and power. The Dutch found themselves struggling on the land against Louis XIV and on the seas against the English. Greatly outnumbered, they needed allies to maintain the balance of power in Europe.
This semester we’ll study the English civil wars of religion, better known as The Puritan and Glorious Revolutions. As a result of the Glorious Revolution of 1688, the Dutch stadholder William III and Mary, daughter of the English king, will assume the English throne, creating a formidable coalition against the Sun King.
Because we know that things come up, we supply the Zoom link to our Tuesday participants and the Wednesday participants. Both groups will get a private link to the recording of each Wednesday class session 48 hours after the class session has ended.
